Meningococcal disease is a serious infection that can cause meningitis and in some cases septicaemia or both. It is transmitted by droplet/aerosol spread, for example coughing or sneezing from an infected person.

In the meningitis belt of Sub-Saharan Africa the incidence rises sharply towards the end of the dry season, when disease spreads rapidly.
Travellers attending the Hajj in Saudi Arabia will need to present a valid certificate of vaccination against Meningitis ACWY
