Travellers' Upset Tummy Kit ( For the management of travellers' diarrhoea)

What is travellers’ diarrhoea?

Travellers’ diarrhoea is classified as three or more loose stools in 24 hours accompanied any of the following:  cramps, nausea, fever, or vomiting. Symptoms may be mild, moderate or severe. It is a common problem for travellers.

Prevention

Be sure to practice good hand hygiene and effective food and water precautions. Hands should be washed thoroughly before eating or handling food, and always after using the toilet. Anti-bacterial hand gel and wipes are an alternative when washing facilities are not available. Despite careful measures it is not always possible to avoid diarrhoea.

Mild cases usually have no other symptoms and do not disrupt normal activities.      

Moderate or severe diarrhoea has additional symptoms and disrupts normal activities.   

On average symptoms last 3-5 days and will usually resolve without treatment

Rehydration

The priority in treatment is preventing dehydration. Clear fluids such as diluted fruit juices or ideally specially prepared oral rehydrating solutions made up with safe drinking water should be drunk liberally. Please read the product information leaflet.

Antidiarrhoeal Agents

Loperamide can help reduce the frequency of loose stools and with associated colicky pains. They may cause constipation in over use and are not recommended for children under 12 years of age. Please read the product information leaflet carefully. Do not use Loperamide tablets if symptoms are accompanied with mucous/ bloody diarrhoea or fever.

Marked vomiting, fever, pain, bleeding or dehydration requires prompt medical attention as may require hospital treatment.

        Anti-bacterial hand wipes

        Rehydration sachets x 6

As part of your pre travel risk assessment we will discuss your individual risk of travellers diarrhoea depending on your health and itineray. If appropriate, antibiotic treatment with instructions for use can be added to the above kit .
